7 Smart Tips to Make Moving a Breeze
Moving soon? Read our top tips for success.
Moving to a new house or apartment isn’t always fun, but it doesn’t have to be painful. Here are our top 7 tips for a successful move.
1. Don’t Procrastinate
It’s easy to put off packing until the very last minute, but it always tends to take more time than we think it should. Starting early helps give you enough time to fit everything in and not be stressed.
How often do you get the chance to go through every item you own? Moving is a great way to pare down your possessions and get rid of everything you don’t need. Think of it this way: if you get rid of it, you don’t have to pack it!
3. Label Your Boxes
The better you label, the more oriented you will be in your new place. Be as specific as you can; write the name of the room in big letters on top. On the side of the box, list out the specific items you’ve placed inside.
4. Research Moving Options
It’s worth comparing prices of different dates and companies. Most moving companies are busier and have higher rates on the weekend. If you rent a U-Haul, prices may be cheaper if you pick it up in a neighboring city, especially if you live in a big metropolitan area.
Some people may not want to hire a moving company, but even if you just have a couple of friends come over to help, offer them something for their time. Pizza and drinks are a simple, thoughtful gesture.

5. Pack Strategically
Some people have success with recycled boxes, but moving boxes have the advantage of being sturdier and uniform for easy transport. If you decide to use bags, double check the policies of your moving company. Some may charge extra for moving non-boxed items. In all cases, make sure your fragile items are protected with clothes, packing paper, or bubble wrap.
6. Pack a First Night Box
No matter how well you label your boxes, it will still be difficult going around to find everything you need the first night in your new place. Choose a box that’s a different shape or color from the others and use it to store everything you need for your first night: pajamas, fresh clothes, towels, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other toiletries. Keeping everything you’ll need in one box can help you feel less stressed your first night in a new place.
7. Take a Picture for Easy Reassembly
How confident are you that you could hook up your TV and all associated devices from memory? If you’re like most of us, it may take some effort. If you take a picture of how you wired your electronics, reassembling them is much easier. The same can be said if you have a picture wall or shelf with items you want to keep in a certain order.
Moving doesn’t have to be stressful. Start early, label your boxes, and pack things in a way where you know you’ll find them. You’ll be settled into your new home in no time.
